Whitman has extensive and broad industrial boiler industry experience. He oversaw Superior’s successful relocation of its Richmond, Virginia, operations to Hutchinson in 2020. Over the past few years, Whitman has helped lead considerable division growth while improving operations within the business. Superior also has promoted Tim Zies to Vice President of Operations for Superior Boiler, LLC. Zies, who has been in increasing roles of responsibility since his arrival at Superior Boiler in 2015, most recently was Director of Operations and Assistant General Manager.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. (June 22, 2022) –
Superior Boiler announced today that it has been granted a U.S. patent for engineering advancements that significantly improve the company’s watertube boiler designs. Characteristics of the company’s newly patented DFW design include:

• A smaller overall footprint compared to current designs, while maintaining overall capacity throughput.
• Utilization of a lower fan horsepower to create the same steam flow as a conventional boiler design, resulting in lower overall cost of operations to end users.
• Lower overall operating emissions, resulting in cleaner overall boiler operating systems that are more environmentally friendly.
• Reduced requirements for purchased materials and subcomponents, providing end customers a more cost-competitive offering compared to existing systems.

The event was one of seven regional business appreciation events the Department of Commerce is hosting statewide this spring.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. (Sept. 2, 2021) – At a grand opening/ribbon-cutting event yesterday, Superior Boiler showcased “Plant 3,” its third and newest Hutchinson manufacturing facility. The 75,000-sq.-ft. building was renovated to house Superior’s watertube division, which the company relocated from Richmond, Virginia. Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly, other state and local dignitaries, boiler industry partners and all Superior employees attended the grand opening.

A state-of-the art facility, Plant 3 contains several newer-generation cranes, high ceilings, a paint booth with a new collection and filtration system and, for colder months, floors with radiant heating powered by a Superior hot water boiler. The first watertube boilers manufactured at Plant 3 will be completed by the end of September. The facility is located on 18 acres, allowing for further expansion as needed.

“By relocating our watertube manufacturing to Hutchinson, more customers will benefit from our great central U.S. location, which streamlines shipping anywhere in North America and also offers nearby rail access to move products requiring ocean shipping,” said Doug Wright, Superior’s CEO. “Plant 3 positions us for future growth and allows us to leverage equipment and personnel from current operations to maximize efficiency and provide better overall collaboration across our expertise and our teams.”

The grand opening and ribbon-cutting was punctuated by an introduction of Superior’s newest boiler model, the Cheyenne. The hot water condensing boiler is designed for applications in large hospitals, schools, universities and office buildings, among others.

The event also kicked off the company’s annual Superior Boiler Shootout golf outing, being held today. The tournament benefits the Hutchinson Community College Presidential Leadership Scholarship Program and the American Boiler Manufacturers Association’s Randy Rawson Scholarship Program. Funds raised through local business partners, key industry suppliers and Superior’s authorized sales representatives are evenly divided between the two scholarship programs.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. (August 3, 2021) – Superior Boiler has been awarded patents from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for two game-changing products created for advanced hot water heating in the company’s watertube boilers.

The company’s high-temperature fluid generator, protected by U.S Patent number 11,047,596, provides greater flexibility on the temperature differential of heating, enabling a swing of 160 degrees to 450 degrees. Because of its ability to scale, the fluid generator is designed for industrial applications with large heating loads. Invented by Sundeep Bodapati, Superior’s vice president of engineering watertube division, the generator’s membrane-style construction uses a simplified design that makes it easier and less expensive to fabricate. Its components can be built separately and assembled quickly and, because they are more accessible from the outside than comparative units are, the generator is less costly to use and friendlier from an inspection and maintenance standpoint.

The second patent, number 11,060,717, protects Superior’s multiple pass flexible water tube boiler and its method of use. Invented by Bodapati and retired former employee John R. English, it allows a 75-degree heating differential and uses a tangent tube construction for low-load, smaller building applications. Its unique design, using a reduced number of tubes and bends, decreases its cost and time to build. Placement of the product’s headers all on one side eases access to the unit.

As the new patents demonstrate, we do not just take the conventional road, but learn from and improve upon conventions.”

“Superior focuses on meeting the needs of the application with optimized production and operating costs that are appealing to the customer,” Bodapati said. “In the case of the high-temperature fluid generator, for example, we were asked to meet a customer’s need for a large-load capacity. The most commonly used competing product is complicated to build and comes in multiple pieces, increasing installation costs. Superior’s boiler is easy to build, easy to maintain and installs as a single component.”

Superior also holds a steam application patent for its watertube boilers, issued in July 2020.

(December 7, 2020) – Superior Boiler’s longstanding sales representative in Northern California, Nationwide Boiler, Inc., has acquired the Southern California territory from Mavtech Energy’s owner, James Harber, Superior President and CEO Doug Wright announced today. The transaction was finalized December 1. Wright said Superior fully supports the agreement reached between the two parties.

“Superior Boiler has enjoyed great success in the southern California market under James’ leadership and market development over the past 15 years,” Wright said. “He has worked tirelessly toward building the Superior Boiler brand in southern California. We deeply appreciate his efforts and significant contributions to our success in the territory, and we wish him the very best in his future endeavors.”

HUTCHINSON, Kan. (March 25, 2020) – Superior Boiler announced today that it will relocate its Richmond, Virginia, subsidiary to Hutchinson, Kansas. The relocation will begin in second quarter 2021. Superior acquired the Richmond business, which produces industrial watertube boilers, as part of its 2016 purchase of English Boiler LLC.

“Over the past two years, we looked at multiple sites in five states and in the Richmond area,” said Superior’s President and CEO Doug Wright. “Hutchinson became the clear choice because of the facility available to us, the assistance provided by state and local governments and the ability to combine resources with our current business operations.”

“We are thrilled Superior Boiler chose to grow their operations in Hutchinson,” said Kansas Department of Commerce Secretary David Toland. “The company’s investment, addition of new facilities and over 50 new jobs illustrate why businesses who come to Kansas choose to stay and grow in Kansas.”

Superior employs approximately 150 people in Hutchinson and Richmond. The company expects to add more than 50 jobs in Hutchinson over the next three to five years, with most paying more than $21 per hour on average.

For open positions, Superior will work with local and regional resources, including Hutchinson Community college and the state of Kansas, and conduct internal training for existing employees who may desire to move into new roles.

The Richmond subsidiary will move into a 73,000-square-foot building Superior purchased last year in Hutchinson’s Airport Industrial Park. The facility’s current tenant, Siemens Gamesa, will continue to lease the building through first quarter 2021.

In his new role, LeJeune will lead the sales and marketing initiatives for all Superior Holding businesses, which manufacture products in both Hutchinson, Kansas, and Richmond. He joined Superior in mid-2018 as president and general manager of the watertube boiler division. LeJeune has extensive experience working for both manufacturers and sales representative firms since becoming involved in the boiler industry many years ago. He will relocate from Richmond to Hutchinson.

Whitman, who also has an extensive background in the boiler industry, has worked for the past 28 years helping lead another industry company in a capacity similar to his new role with Superior. He will be responsible for the Richmond facility’s day-to-day operations, including complete profit-and-loss management oversight.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. (September 18, 2019) – Through its seventh annual “Superior Boiler Shootout” event, Hutchinson’s Superior Boiler Inc., manufacturer of industrial watertube, Scotch Marine and vertical firetube boilers, recently raised $15,000 for two student scholarships. The Shootout, held August 28-29, benefitted the Hutchinson Community College Presidential Leadership Scholarship Program and the American Boiler Manufacturers Association’s Randy Rawson Scholarship Program. Funds raised at the Shootout provided $7,500 to each scholarship program.

This year’s Superior Boiler Shootout also included a shooting event, a new option for those who don’t golf but enjoy sporting guns.

“For the second year, Superior Boiler directed money raised at the Shootout to give deserving students access to additional educational funds,” said Doug Wright, CEO of Superior Boiler. “By dividing the money evenly, we were able to benefit both our industry association and the Hutchinson community. We’re impressed with and humbled by the number of participants in the 2019 event and grateful for their involvement in helping us raise funds for scholarships.”

The 2019 Shootout at Prairie Dunes was Superior’s largest to date, with 40 golfers and 12 shooters participating, including customers, sales representatives, industry partners and key suppliers.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. (September 12, 2019) – Superior Boiler was recently awarded a contract for a major boiler room expansion at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Superior was selected through a competitive bid process based upon providing the best overall value for the project.

Superior will supply Dalhousie with two Shawnee model-style watertube boilers, D-type with a square furnace. Each includes Superior-manufactured economizers and is designed to deliver up to 85,000 pounds per hour of steam capability. The boilers will be equipped with burners supplied from Tulsa, Oklahoma-based Zeeco capable of firing on both natural gas and oil, along with an Allen-Bradley combustion controls package. Both boilers incorporate the latest technology to maintain low emissions and optimize operating efficiency. The boilers will be manufactured at Superior’s Richmond, Virginia, facility.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. (Jan. 30, 2019) – Superior Boiler has been awarded three projects for Veterans Administration hospitals, the company announced today. Two of the hospitals are in the northwest United States, and the third is a hospital in the Midwest.

Each hospital required a custom-engineered solution based on specific requirements. Superior will deliver its Wichita boilers to two of the facilities. This newer model in the company’s boiler line incorporates the latest engineering enhancements to maximize efficiency and operations in a small footprint. The third hospital will utilize Superior’s efficient Mohican boiler, which has a four-pass wet back chambered design.

RICHMOND, Va. (Nov. 13, 2017) – Superior Boiler, celebrated its 100^th year of continuous operations with a special all-employee dinner at The Town Club in Hutchinson, Kansas, Friday, Nov. 10, 2017. During the event, now-retired former employees and current or former military personnel were recognized, and current employee service awards were presented. Kendall Gammon from the Chiefs Radio Network was the special speaker to end the event.

System Helps Critical Utility Plant Achieve Greater Energy Efficiency

HUTCHINSON, Kan. (Nov. 7, 2017)

Superior Boiler, recently manufactured and delivered a custom-engineered deaerator boiler feedwater system for a major power-generating facility operating in the northeast United States. The completed system was a significant engineering project that showcased the full capabilities of SBW’s feedwater system team, from initial design phase through manufacturing, final acceptance and a rigorous quality inspection process.

Superior’s team was tasked with the structural engineering involved for ladders, platforms and the unit as a whole, as well as assembly of the entire unit in the factory to ensure fit and function. The highlights of the delivered unit consisted of a tray-type 200,000 pound-per- hour (pph) deaerator feeding boiler water at 380 psig from a 4,000-gallon storage tank compartment. It included a custom hot-dipped, galvanized ladder and platform structure, which, along with the entire system, was more than 37 ft. tall and was certified to the latest seismic standards by licensed engineers.

“Our customer presented Superior with a unique challenge, and our entire team, from sales to engineering through operations, worked together to provide a robust solution specific to their needs,” said Superior Boiler Vice President of Sales & Marketing Gabriel Dauphin. “One of our strengths is having control over the entire process, since we design and manufacture all of our deaerators in our facilities. Our engineering department works closely with our customers and operations to insure we deliver the best possible design to our customers with exceptional value.”

During their Oct. 19 all-day visit to the Hutchinson-based energy solutions and clean air technology company, students job-shadowed employees, toured the facility and performed welding tasks. The one-of- a-kind piece of equipment is ready for service, the companies announced today. The ASME Section I firetube boiler, ASME spray deaerator and ASME blowdown separator, manufactured by Hutchinson, Kan.-based Superior Boiler, required more than a year of custom engineering, planning and production time.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. (March 6, 2014) – Superior Boiler announced today that its high-efficiency Creek condensing boilers have received UL approval. The certification indicates that the Creek boilers meet stringent product safety and efficiency standards, as set by the Department of Energy, through testing performed and verified by UL as an authorized third party.

Superior, manufacturer of boilers and ancillary boiler room equipment for more than 60 years, offers its Creek ST boilers as a complete package. These products, with tailored options available to meet specific applications, are a joint effort between Superior Boiler and its condensing boiler partner, ICI Caldaie, an Italian company.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. (Jan. 14, 2013) – Superior Boiler, announced today that it has completed and delivered a new boiler and feedwater system for the new O.H. Kruse Feed Technology Innovation Center being constructed at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kan. The donated boiler was a high- efficiency 80HP Apache, 2-pass dryback, high-pressure steam boiler.

Partnership agreement joins companies’ technology, distribution and marketing efforts to deliver condensing boiler technology to the North American market

HUTCHINSON, Kan. (Dec. 5, 2012) – Superior Boiler, and ICI Caldaie, S.p.A., announced today that they have established a strategic business partnership that allows SBW to utilize ICI’s high-efficiency condensing boiler technology. As part of the agreement, SBW will provide certain value-added components to the base boilers at its facility to complete the final packaged boiler product. SBW’s facility also will conduct final acceptance testing.

Through its distribution network, SBW will exclusively sell the ICI manufactured boilers throughout Canada, Mexico and the United States as part of its Creek condensing boiler product line in sizes from 300,000 to 6,000,000 Btu/h.
