Superior Boiler encourages mentees to focus on their abilities, rather than their disabilities
HUTCHINSON, Kan. (Oct. 28, 2016) – During last week’s National Disability Mentoring Day, employees at Superior Boiler focused on the abilities of four area high school students with disabilities. During their Oct. 19 all-day visit to the Hutchinson-based energy solutions and clean air technology company, students job-shadowed employees, toured the facility and performed welding tasks. Superior Boiler mentors discussed career opportunities in welding with the eager mentees. “Disability Mentoring Day was a great opportunity to bring the disability and business communities together,” said Superior Boiler CEO Doug Wright. “This is the first year Superior Boiler has supported this event, and I’m not sure who found it more rewarding, the mentees or our employees.” “We get to work alongside the students and teach them about our jobs,” said Director of Operations Danny Lane. “They are engaged and excited to learn more about joining the workforce. It makes for a very good day at work.”
The American Association of People with Disabilities sponsors the annual nationwide program, which increases public awareness of the contributions and skills of workers with disabilities. Locally, the event is hosted by the Prairie Independent Living Resource Center, Inc.
